A green roof is covered with vegetation. In essence a rooftop garden, green roofs were perfected in the 1960s in Germany, and have become fairly popular in numerous European countries. It is only in recent times however, that green roof technology has begun to catch on in the U.S.

More often than not, buildings have a waterproofing tensile membrane, over which the greenery is grown. A green roof is not the same as a rooftop garden. The second can have plants in containers, which is not actually part of the green roof system. In a green roof system the tensile waterproof membrane shields the building from water leakage, which can cause immense harm to the structure.

Building a green roof can serve a number of purposes. Going beyond beautifying your roof top, it can also supply insulation and reduce temperature and give many more benefits. You ideally should have an appropriately thought out green roof design, which is best suited and customized for your rooftop.

Not only are green roofs super for the environment, but they are also an exceptional investment. A correctly installed green roof can last a minimum of twice as long as characteristic roofing material, in that way saving you thousands of dollars in repair and replacement costs.

Green Roofing is tremendous for city dwellers who often want for green space such as a yard or a deck. The addition of a green roof can supply a space to express one’s creativity, and bring a bit of nature back to the city. In fact, by growing vegetation, you can invite insects, birds, and butterflies that would otherwise not have anywhere else to go. As a further benefit, green rooftops are aesthetically lovely and offer a visual contrast to the cement structures that dominate the cityscape.

What are green roofs?

Green roofs or eco-roofs are the modern versions, and have many of the benefits of the ‘sod roofs’ that have been used in Scandinavia for centuries. Green roofs have risen rapidly in popularity, particularly in Germany and the Netherlands, and now in the UK.

There are 2 types of modern green roof systems, intensive and extensive. Intensive green roof systems are generally for heavier landscape constructions on flat roofs, whereas extensive systems can be installed over any deck and contain a number of layers including vapour retarder, insulation and waterproofing membrane layers beneath the vegetation. The general idea is to firstly provide a waterproof layer on a flat roof (or angled up to 45 degrees), and then put a thin layer of living vegetation on top of this.

What is the point of a green roof?

A green roof / eco-roof / living roof as the name suggests, has a more positive environmental and energy efficient impact than a conventional roof. A green roof provides an ecologically friendly space which ‘gives back’ to its environment rather than harming or taking away from it.

Unlike ‘roof gardens’ which are traditionally for city dwellers with no ground level garden space, green roofs are not as ‘heavy’ i.e. they only have a thin layer of vegetation (sedum and mosses). Roof gardens have large amounts of soil and all manner of plants, which in turn means work and maintenance are required throughout the year. Green roofs however are virtually self-sustaining, perhaps requiring some weeding once a year, or an application of slow-release fertiliser.

There are a number of other benefits to green roofs:

Rainfall is trapped in the vegetation and released slowly, thus helping to prevent flooding.

The layer of vegetation acts as natural insulation, thus reducing your heating / energy consumption and bills.

The insulating properties of the vegetation layer also reduce any extremes of temperature inside a building i.e. the sun’s heat is absorbed during the day keeping the inside of the building cool, and this heat is retained at night keeping the building warm.

Green roofs provide a fantastic environment / micro habitat for wildlife e.g. beetles, spiders, birds, bees and butterflies.

A green roof is visually appealing and contributes to a more ‘natural’ looking environment in a built-up area.

How can you get a green roof?

Find a specialist flat roofing company in your area, and ask them for a survey and quote.

Green roofs are more commonly known as power saving resources in California due to all of the power that they help to harness and recycle. These roofs are extremely popular in farms and open fields because they help produce the needed energy to power up a house without using any electricity or power from outside sources. The material and technology used to make a green roof are simple. Some of them use plants, pots and foil. Others use other materials such as windmill like objects or a natural generator to help a house maximize their energy potential.

Advantages Of A Green Roof

A green roof is built by covering an entire area or roof by some sort of vegetation—either completely or partially. This green cover may carry entire gardens, have irrigation facilities, drainage systems and additional features. They are complicated to construct, but have many advantages. It not only makes a building look beautiful, but has a positive impact on the environment as well. They also reduce heating of the place, and can act as a solar heat pool if glassed. It does natural filtering of pollutants and harmful gases and make great agricultural spots.

To have this kind of an energy saver in a home, a person can easily either put the components together themselves or hire a special contractor that knows how to do this. It is very important to realize how this can help the planet when it comes to using and harvesting unused, renewable energy.

With this method a person can use plants, grass or even dirt to help capture some of the energy from the sun or wind to use as their own personal energy keepsake. There are a lot of ways that this can help people save a lot of energy and also store it for later for more purposes.

Green Roofs For Green Living

Green roofs are amazing things that have revolutionized the way we harness and use energy and this is one of the reasons why many companies are using them to promote green living. They are allowing homes to use as well as reuse energy in an effort to go green. Everything that we do affects our planet, and this new design helps us better our eco system and help us save more money in the process. This is a method that takes a while to develop but the results long term and seen daily. There are many other things while using green roofs in such as energy saving titles to promote a greener environment.

The best part of a green roof is all of the information that we learn and put to use as we discover how to depend on more natural forms of energy. These roofs are very noticeable as they come in the forms of plants and dirt and whole beds of flowers for any one who wants to have them installed in their own homes. One of the most prominent way that these flowers are used are in the back of each house, as they work better to capture and turn the heat into energy to help power up to 10 houses in a block or more.
