The world is full of copper lovers, and lovers of the copper roof are by no means an exception. There are essentially two different types of copper roof you can buy, there is the solid copper roof that consists solely of sheet copper on your roof. It is very resilient to weathering and will protect your house for decades but it is incredibly costly, as you can imagine. On the other hand, copper roof shingles are made by attached sheets of copper around standard asphalt shingles. All in all, the cost is likely to work out less than a slate roof but once the copper roof shingles have aged and been weathered they will take on the magnificent green look that only copper can create.

Can I use copper roof shingles?

One of the advantages that copper roof shingles offer over other forms of long lasting roofs, especially the solid copper roof, is that the shingles are actually surprisingly light and most roofs and structures can usually cope with the load admirably. As long as you are prepared to pay approximately per square foot (compared to for standard asphalt but up to for solid copper) there is unlikely to be any good reason why you can not use copper roof shingles on your roof.

What kind of life can I expect from copper roof shingles? This is something of a confusing issue. Asphalt roof shingles will normally only last 20 years, but covered in copper sheeting the life of the asphalt shingles can easily be extended to between 30 and 40 years. However, the copper sheet itself will last an average of about 150 years. Obviously the copper roof shingles themselves will only last as long as the asphalt roof shingles that are found underneath the copper.

The cost of copper roof shingles.

Copper roof shingles are by no means a cheap alternative to other styles of roofing but if you like the look of copper and you want a longer life than asphalt shingles can offer then copper roof shingles are an excellent option. The copper sheet doesn’t an excellent job of protecting the asphalt shingles underneath effectively giving them an extended life of around 30 to 40 years. The copper sheeting also protects the shingles from most general wear and tear meaning that with good, regular maintenance you won’t need to have repairs done too often. On a yearly basis copper roof shingles do work out cheap but not overall and not for the initial installation.

Standard asphalt roof shingles usually cost around per square foot, whereas solid copper roofing will set you back around per square foot. Copper roof shingles are available at approximately to per square foot so they are 4 times more expensive than asphalt but considerably cheaper than a full solid copper roof. However, you are undoubtedly paying for the attractive looks of a copper roof but for less money than covering the entire roof in an expensive metal.

Too many people believe that a residential roofer is solely someone to call when you have a roof repair that needs to be fixed. But I found out that a residential roofer can actually help people with so many other items besides a simple roof repair.

I called a residential roofer to find out what I need to do to take advantage of the fantastic tax credits the Federal government is handing homeowners that remodel their houses with environmentally friendly materials; he didnt even stop to think about it. He instantly started to list all kinds of choices.

I have an old flat roof structure in Southern California and I never was able to use the area for much. My wife and children would hang out up there and relax in the sun or grow a few vegetables in small planting trays, but that was it.

The residential roofer brought up an idea I had never even heard of: Green roofs. When he said green roofs I knew I had to look totally stupid because I had no clue what he was talking about.

The residential roofer explained to me that green roofs were entire rooftop gardens and patio spaces that qualify for the federal governments tax credit, offered for environmentally friendly remodel projects. He even told me that it was a good idea for me to talk to my tax professional before I committed to having him do the job, so I knew how much of a tax credit I could receive.

The residential roofer even helped me to plan a water collection system that is frequently used to water green roofs. By gathering rain water, I have added even more of a savings than simply the tax credit. Now my whole family spends hours each day on the roof. Last week we invited all the friends and family over to grill up there. I couldn’t be more glad about the residential roofer I got.

A few things to look for in a residential roofer incorporate checking that they are state licensed and insured. When you meet with a residential roofer, ask them for a least three references of other projects they have completed and go check the other work out.

A residential roofer that knows how to make green roofs may seem like an unusual occurrence, but they are out there. I merely happened to get lucky and find the right one the first time.

When I decided that I was set up to hire the residential roofer he came by and had me sign a contract and then mentioned a deposit. I balked at first, but I had previously checked with the State of Californians site regarding contractors in the state. The page said that I should never pay more than ten percent as a deposit and to never pay for work that was not done.

I offered the residential roofer a ten percent deposit and a few weeks later we were up on the roof admiring the beautiful southern California sun. With the tax credit and utility savings, this project has already paid for itself.

2nd part

read the 1st part here

HOW MANY NAILS PER SHINGLE?

It depends on the number of tabs.

For example the normal three – tab rectangular asphalt shingles used in USA / Canada need 4 nails: two above the cutouts and two near the edges.

In Europe, mostly four-tab asphalt shingles are used and the number of nails needed is 5/shingles.

More nails are needed:

- in windy regions

- when slopes are very steep, normally bigger than 200%.

In this case two nails are used above the cutout. So 6 nails will be needed for the 3-tab shingles and 8 nails for the 4-tab shingles.

WHAT ABOUT STAPLING ?

Stapling is not recommended in Europe and as far as I know also in USA and in Canada.

Stapling can easily damage shingles.

WHERE EXACTLY TO PLACE THE NAILS?

In Europe we place the nails a little above the sealant strip. The nails are placed 2-3cm above the upper point of the cutout. The nails near the edges should not be closer than 2,5cm from the edges.

On no occasion should the nails be driven into discontinuities and problematic points of the substrate.

HAND NAILING OR PNEUMATIC NAILER?

Hand nailing is more accurate. It does a better job but it is slower and most expensive. If you cannot afford hand nailing for the whole project, at least use it:

- near the rakes

- for the first course at the eaves

- for the ridge and the hips

- for the valleys.

Because hand nailing is more accurate, it will reduce the possibility of wind uplift at this critical regions.

The nails should be driven vertically and flush with the upper side of the asphalt shingle securing it in its position.

If the nail is overdriven, it will harm the integrity of the asphalt shingle.

If the nails are underdriven, they cannot fix / secure the asphalt shingles properly.

In the case that the nails are not completely vertical, they will harm the shingle with their heads. These nails should be discarded and replaced.

CONCLUSION

Learn the right nailing techniques because they are critical for the expected life and behaviour of the shingles.

Do pay to buy the best quality nails in the market.

I live in one of those flat-roof homes in Southern California that was created in the thirties; you’ve probably found them in downtown Los Angeles. I totally love my home, but I never exactly cared for the fact that I had no yard to speak of, until I put up a residential green roof. Now I have got this totally sweet spot on the roof that I can have little house parties and grill. If you think that a residential green roof sounds awesome, wait till you know how much I saved on my taxes after I did it.

Thats right; I ended up getting immense tax credits from the Federal Government because I remodeled my residence with a residential green roof. Now, I not only have this great space to soak up the Southern California sun, but I saved thousands on my taxes. With all of the utility-saving the residential green roof is giving me, the whole job has just about paid for itself.

With all of the fantastic advantages to having a residential green roof, most of my neighbors are completely jealous. Lots of them are starting to design a residential green roof for their house, and before you know it everyone on my block will end up having one. I cant blame them, especially because of the added appraisal value the residential green roof gave me on my house.

If you assume you might wish to talk to a roofing contractor about a residential green roof you should consider a few points first. Ensure you get a roofing contractor that has done a residential green roof before. It should not be that hard to get one in Southern California. I ended up finding three, which is great because the State of California advises that homeowners get at least three roofing estimates from three different roofing contractors.

The State of California also recommended that homeowners get at least three references for each roofing contractor, and go look at the other things that they have completed. I may not have hired the least costly roofing contractor to do my residential green roof, but I definitely feel like I got the best one for me.

After I figured out which roofing contractor to go with I met up with them and signed a contract so they could get the work done. I was so thrilled that I nearly forgot that the States website about what to look for in a roofing contractor said that I should never pay more than ten percent of the overall cost of the job as a deposit. That was okay because that was all they asked for and they never asked for more until they were finished with the job.

I could not be more happy with my residential green roof and the roofing contractor I got to do the labor. So if you are looking for someone to do a residential green roof for you then I suggest you do some research, because there are some really good roofing contractors in Southern California and some of them can create a really gorgeous residential green roof.

Hale-stones, thunder-storms, freezing rains and tropical downpours are only a few of the natural challenges that can damage your Atlanta roof. And because a lot of roofs in Atlanta are old, the damages caused by Atlanta’s infamous weather become even more pronounced. With this in mind, we cannot stress enough the importance of your Atlanta roofing’s proper maintenance.

Some other problems with old Atlanta roofing are poor air-flow within the roof and the attic, lack of drains, use of sub-standard roofing materials and other poor design standards all add up to a high probability of major roof damage and, eventually, very expensive repairs. If you are living in an old Atlanta house right now, you might want to start repairs on your old Atlanta roof now, before the infamous weather conditions in Atlanta takes its toll on your already fragile roof.

However, there are a lot of things you should be considering first before you start rushing off to get your roof repaired. You, first, have to decide on what Atlanta roofing materials would be most fitting for your roof.

Atlanta roofing stores provide many different materials for your Atlanta roof; but that would also mean differences in costs. Shingle roofing material for your Atlanta roof, for instance, would cost between ,000 to ,000, including the cost of installation; with other Atlanta roofing materials priced even higher.

After selecting your Atlanta roofing material, you, now, have to consider how long the repairs and installation would take. If you decide to install shingle roofing materials to your Atlanta roof, it will probably take anywhere from 3 days to 3 weeks for an Atlanta roofing contractor to complete the job. The type of materials you choose for your Atlanta roof will also determine just how swiftly an Atlanta roofing contractor can repair your roof when necessary.

Always ask yourself how you want your Atlanta roof to look like; how quickly you will need your roof done if it will undergo repairs; and what your budget is. Research on your Atlanta roofing needs first, before calling a roof Atlanta contractor. A good place to start your search for answers is the internet. After that, you could ask some trusted friends or relatives to recommend a reputable Atlanta roofing contractor for you. But no matter how you decide to go about this, get your Atlanta roof in top shape as soon as you can.

Roll roofing is really a major job – often too much for a homeowner to tackle. Nevertheless, in case you believe you can tackle the job, this article could be helpful. It is very important to install your roof on a warm day. If it is cold, your roofing materials will be brittle and hard. For at least 24 hours prior to installation, lay out the roll roofing so it is flat. This will allow the roll to relax. Then it won’t keep trying to roll back up and pull up your nails when it is on your roof.

Various Types of Roofing Materials

First, let’s discuss the choices available in roofing materials. In rural areas, Mineral-Surfaced Roll Roofing is often used. One side of this material is covered with little granules and rocks. This is often used on barns, sheds, and as a covering to animal pens.

A less used type is Specialty-Eaves Flashings. In areas with frequent icy buildups, this method is often used on the eaves. One type that is easy to visualize is “Smooth-Surfaced”. It is pretty much like Mineral Surfaced; however, it is covered with ground talc instead of little rocks. When an extra sealant is needed (e.g. on the eaves), smooth-surfaces sheets are used.

The last type is called Saturated Felt. This is a part that lies on top of the roof deck and underneath the roofing material.

Hot Stuff!

It is harder to install hot asphalt than to do a cold installation, but a lot of people say it is a better material. Mainly, it is just very difficult to manage hot asphalt and a roll of roofing all alone. It is usually too difficult and hazardous for a homeowner to tackle. However, the cold installation of roll roofing has become more popular. You can get the spreadable adhesive at the majority of construction stores. First the cold application is spread using a large squeegee. Then it is smoothed out until it is perfect. After that, the roofing section is placed upon it.

Where are the materials for roll roofing sold?

You can buy the amount of roll roofing necessary for your job at your local hardware store. You can also shop online or in person at larger stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot. Just look for Lowes.com or HomeDepot.com to find good deals on roll roofing that you can have delivered! Safety is a crucial part of roof installation, so make sure you know how to do the job. It is hard to do roll roofing. It would be good if you could get someone with experience to assist you..

Metal roofs, also commonly called as tin roofs, are just one of the many ways to keep a place warm. The main job of a metal roof is to capture and maintain heat in during cold times and to keep out the warmth during the hot seasons. There is a wide range of metal roofs to choose from, depending on where a person lives. In most cases a home owner only needs a cool metal cover to keep in the heat. Besides being a top recommendation for temperature changes, metal roofing systems are one of the safest systems for any house or building because they are twice as likely to keep unwanted objects out and stay tough in any kind of weather.

Advantages of Metal Roofs

Metal roofs are light weight, portable and most importantly, very durable. They have a very high strength to weight ratio, due to which they are used for the roofing of very large buildings. They are strong and resilient, and are resistant to wind, hail, fire or sparks. Once installed, metal roofs demand little or in fact, no maintenance at all.

Installation of Metal Roofs

Not every roofing contractor will know how to install metal in roofs which is why the setting up can sometimes be expensive, but it is worth the money. Most of the installations take place in cities and in the country side, because the weather is unpredictable at such places and it is more likely that people will want something stronger for their house. Any contractor or service provider will give the person a free estimate on this kind of installation work and will allow the person to choose from different designs. Not every design can be used for every household since the contractor has to abide by city rules. The one problem that resides with the installation of metal in houses is the city laws that the houses have to pass as a first step. There are many things that the family can be in danger of with metal in their homes, one of being standing seam.

These are a few points that any person has to think about when they want to think about metal roof installation in their homes. Each person has the choice of getting it if they feel sure enough about having it set up in their homes; however, they have to abide by the rules of the roofing manufacturers in every way. The most commonly used materials for metal roofing are galvanized steel, stainless steel, copper, aluminum and stone coated steel. One of the main reasons why there are so many choices of metals for this job is because there are many types of houses that use different types of material. So a professional will need to make an assessment before coming to a decision.

Metal roofs have definitely grown in popularity in the recent years because of the increasingly high demand for them in certain areas such as small cities and some farms. The most important thing about a metal roof is the commodity and specialty in which they are built. Each part is genuinely different, and reliable.
