Asphalt Roofing Shingles: The Most Popular Roofing

by The Roof Buying Team on February 15, 2011

If you think about roofs, you probably envision asphalt roofing shingles. Almost everyone has an asphalt shingle roof. This type of roofing material is the most popular in the US.

The most important thing to note when we’re talking about residential roofing materials, is that as with most residential construction materials on the market today, there is an ever increasing move toward engineered roofing materials. If you’ve been in the market for residential roofing material you’ve no doubt noticed the reasons why this is the case. One is simply the high cost of wood. The other is that in many parts of the country building codes make the use of fireproof construction materials mandatory. Lastly, most of us want to build with materials that, not only make our houses look good, they last a long time giving us a better return on our investment.

A Successful Roof Made Of Asphalt Roofing Shingles: One reason this ubiquitous material is so popular is that it is abundantly available. It is also inexpensive, light and easy to handle, and simple to install. A good roofer will be able to install the asphalt roofing shingles and maintain them. Slate roofing is different. It takes different skills in cutting, handling, and laying down.

There are different grades of roofing materials of every kind, including asphalt roofing shingles. The better grades are more expensive. It may be less expensive to buy your materials now than later. Are asphalt roofing shingles very durable? If you want something tough enough for hail, get Class 4. Remember, you’re no longer stuck with only gray as a color choice. There are lots of colors of asphalt roofing shingles today.

Asphalt, paper, and felt are combined into an organic material to make asphalt roofing shingles. Organic ones are more expensive, but they are also heavier. They are less likely to be blown away. If you plan on living in your home for several years, think of using an organic alternative.

A Warrantied Roof: Many times, your asphalt roofing shingles will have a warranty that will last for a few decades. If you want a special brand (e.g. Eagle or Elk) your contractor can order it. Asphalt roofing shingles are very durable, but they should have a check-up twice a year to be sure everything is working the way it should.

You should have your roof inspected once or twice a year to be sure there are not little problems that may become major catastrophes. It is possible for tiles to become loosened and/or damaged. It is easy to get replacements. They are readily available.

Make sure there is good ventilation in your upper crawlspace or your attic. Naturally, the outdoor temperature is different from the indoor temperature. When this situation occurs, the roof will be cold on one side and hot on the other. This can cause a lot of stress on asphalt roofing shingles, and eventually, destroy them. If you have a good buffer zone between your home and your roof, there is less stress caused by the difference in temperature. If there is any mold or water in your crawlspace, or if it just smells damp, something is wrong and needs to be fixed.
